Backflow Prevention

Backflow Prevention Testing & Installation – Victoria
Backflow prevention protects your drinking water from contamination. If contaminated water flows back into the mains supply it can affect your household and the wider community.
What is a backflow prevention device?
A mechanical device fitted to a water supply line that stops water flowing in the wrong direction. Different hazard ratings exist depending on the risk level of the property or appliance.
Who needs backflow prevention in Victoria?
You generally require a backflow prevention device if you have any of the following:
• Commercial kitchens, cafes or restaurants
• Medical or dental facilities
• Chemical injection or dosing systems
• Irrigation systems connected to mains water
• Rainwater tanks connected to the mains
• Fire services
• Certain industrial processes
• Boilers or cooling towers
How often must devices be tested?
In Victoria, registered backflow prevention devices must be tested every 12 months by a licensed tester. Failure to test can result in fines or the water authority disconnecting supply.
